If you have a transfer station sticker and a car-sized load, the town station is usually the simpler trip; for a full cleanout, or for things the station won't take, we bring the dumpster and load it.
What the town handles
Getting rid of junk in Southborough
The town runs a residents-only transfer station on Cordaville Road. It takes a lot, but it has firm limits on vehicles, construction debris, and what can go in the compactor.
- Household trash
- Residents can bring trash to the town transfer station with a sticker, or hire a private hauler. Private haulers need a Board of Health permit and have to offer trash and recycling pickup together. Board of Health hauler regulations
- Transfer station and stickers
- The station is at the John Boland Public Works Facility, 147 Cordaville Road, and is open Wednesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For FY2027, the first sticker is $320 ($75 for property owners 65 and older), and each additional one is $25. - Furniture and bulky items
- Furniture can go in the compactor. A sleeper sofa is accepted only after the mattress has been taken out, and the sleeper mattress itself isn't accepted. FY2027 rules and regulations
- Mattresses and box springs
- The transfer station rules say these aren't accepted in Southborough. The town's recycling page lists a drop-off in Worcester and a pickup service, both for a fee. Recycling Information page
- Appliances and TVs
- White goods (large appliances) are on the state waste-ban list, so they can't go in the compactor; the rules don't list an appliance fee, so call the DPW first. - Yard waste and brush
- Leaves and grass clippings can't go in the compactor, and the rules mention a separate brush area at the station. Tree logs, stumps, and wood more than 2 feet long or 4 inches thick aren't allowed in the compactor either. FY2027 rules and regulations
- Household hazardous waste
- The Household Hazardous Waste and CRT Collection Day is October 17, 2026. You need a valid transfer station sticker to take part. FY2027 rules and regulations
- Renovation debris
- Construction and demolition debris, including carpet, is limited to two 32-gallon barrels. Sheetrock, brick, concrete, and asphalt can't go in the compactor. FY2027 rules and regulations
Honest fit
When a cleanout crew makes more sense in Southborough
If you already pay for a sticker, use it. The station handles everyday loads well. It just isn't set up for big cleanouts.

How a Clearday job works in Southborough

Can I borrow a truck to go to the Southborough transfer station?
Yes, with a temporary pass. The FY2027 rules list a $15 day pass or a $25 week pass for a borrowed or rented vehicle, and you, the sticker holder, have to be in the vehicle. Pickups with a dump bed, box trucks, and trailers longer than 10 feet aren't allowed in.
Can I pay someone to bring my junk to the Southborough transfer station?
No. The rules say temporary passes can't be used by contractors, landscapers, haulers, or businesses, and waste generated by contractors counts as commercial waste, which the station doesn't take. Anyone you hire has to bring it to a different facility.
What if I miss the September 15 sticker deadline in Southborough?
Vehicles without the new sticker are turned away starting September 15. You can't buy one at the station, so apply online, mail in the application, or go to the DPW office on Cordaville Road on a weekday between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Can I leave furniture at the Southborough swap shop?
Sometimes. Small, clean furniture may be accepted when there's room, generally Wednesday through Friday during swap shop hours and Saturday until 11 a.m. Staff make the call, and torn or stained upholstery, mattresses, and TVs are turned away.
I'm buying a new mattress. What do I do with the old one in Southborough?
Ask the store. MassDEP notes that most furniture and mattress sellers will take the old mattress when they deliver the new one, which is usually easier than finding a recycler yourself.
