What the city handles
Getting rid of junk in Marlborough
Here's what the city itself offers residents, in plain terms, with a link to the city page for each.
- Household trash
- The city collects trash at the curb every Tuesday and recycling every other Tuesday, based on your zone (Route 85 and west, or east of Route 85). In a holiday week, pickup moves to Wednesday. 2026–27 collection calendar
- Bulky items at the curb
- You can schedule a special item pickup for furniture, appliances, electronics, and metal. Each piece must be 50 pounds or less, no longer than 48 inches, and liftable by one person. The February 2026 flyer lists an $80 fee, and mattresses, construction material, and yard waste aren't accepted. Special item collection guidelines
- Mattresses and box springs
- Call the DPW to schedule a curbside mattress pickup. The city says each household gets two free a calendar year, then pays $25 for each one after that. City mattress pickup notice
- Resident Drop-Off Facility
- The facility is on Boston Post Road East and is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You need a permit: Tier One is $50 for 6 bulk items and 50 bags of kitchen trash, it's free for residents 65 and older, and payment is by personal check or money order only. Facility guidelines
- Appliances and TVs
- At the drop-off facility, a refrigerator, air conditioner, or dehumidifier uses one bulk item on your permit (take the refrigerator doors off first). A load of electronics also counts as one, with no more than one TV or monitor per load. Facility guidelines
- Yard waste and brush
- Permit holders can bring yard waste up to three times a week, with no plastic bags, and branches can be up to 8 inches by 4 feet. The city calendar also marks curbside leaf bag weeks in November and May. Facility guidelines
- Household hazardous waste
- Marlborough and Hudson hold joint collection days from 9 a.m. to noon at 860 Boston Post Road East. The 2026–27 calendar lists October 24, 2026 and May 8, 2027. Latex paint and single-use batteries are not accepted. Hazardous Waste Day page and calendar
- Renovation debris

- You would use up your drop-off permit's bulk items in the first couple of trips.

- You're clearing an estate or a rental after move-out and don't want to rent a truck, load it, and haul it.

- You have one or two pieces that fit the special item pickup rules.
- It's a mattress or box spring, and you still have a free city pickup left this year.
- You already have a drop-off permit, a vehicle, and time, and the load fits the facility's size limits.
- It's leaves in paper bags during a leaf collection week.
- It's paint, chemicals, or propane. We can't take those either, so save them for hazardous waste day.

Dumpster or pickup truck
For big jobs, we drop a 13–15 yard roll-off dumpster in your driveway or yard, load it to the top, and have it hauled away. Smaller loads go in a pickup truck.
Everything gets sorted
Usable items go to donation, metal goes to a scrap yard, and electronics and mattresses go to recyclers. The rest goes to a transfer station.
We'll get you on the schedule as soon as we can. Timing depends on when the dumpster can be dropped off and when the dump can take the load.

When does Marlborough pick up mattresses?
The city's curbside mattress pickup runs every other Wednesday for residents who sign up by calling the DPW at 508-624-6910. Put the mattress or box spring out no earlier than the night before your pickup.
Can I take an old couch to the Marlborough drop-off facility myself?
Yes, if you have a Resident Drop-Off Facility permit. A load of furniture counts as one bulk item on your permit as long as it fits within 8 by 5 by 2 feet, and heaped loads are turned away.
Where do renovation scraps go in Marlborough?
Not to the city. The drop-off facility doesn't accept residential construction and demolition debris, and the curbside special item pickup won't take construction material either. A small pile can go in a pickup load, and a bigger job usually calls for a dumpster. See construction debris removal.
Is the Marlborough hazardous waste day open to Hudson residents?
Yes. The city runs it with the Town of Hudson, and the May 2026 flyer limited it to Marlborough and Hudson residents with proof of residency. Medications aren't collected there; the flyer sends people to their local police station or to certain pharmacies instead.
Will Clearday take paint cans and propane tanks from my Marlborough basement?
No. We don't haul chemicals, oil-based paint, solvents, fuel, or propane tanks. The city's hazardous waste collection day does accept oil-based paint and propane tanks, so set those aside for it before we come.
